Robert's Helpful Hints

  • Apply for tags in as many states as you can afford.
  • Build bonus/preference points in every state that offers them.
  • Do not be afraid of drawing too many tags in one year. Worst-case-scenario: You have to eat a $300 mule deer tag to go on a sheep hunt.
  • Apply for archery and muzzleloader tags for increased draw odds.
  • Get your family involved. Build points for your spouse and children for tags they may want to draw.
  • Apply online in all states where offered in order to avoid making mistakes on paper applications and jeopardizing your chance of drawing your dream tag.
  • Designate one credit card for tag draws only. This card should have a minimum of a $10,000 credit limit. This will make it simpler to keep track of the money you put out for applications.
  • States such as Utah and Idaho where you have to pick one species or another, make sure you stick with one species and put in for it every year until you draw the tag.
  • Do not be discouraged if you do not draw a good tag every year. Just keep applying and it will pay off in time. I apply for roughly 45 tags per year, and I am lucky if I draw 1-3 great tags in a year.
  • With sheep tags being the hardest tags to draw, I recommend applying in every state that offers them.
  • Apply early. Some states have a correction period, and if the application is received early enough and there is a problem, the state will try to contact you to fix the problem
